The Nature Medicine study from September 2025 reported 62,775 heat-related deaths in Europe during summer 2024, with 67,873 in 2022 and 50,798 in 2023. The Guardian's June 2026 coverage of a World Weather Attribution analysis independently stated that more than 60,000 people died due to heat in Europe in the summer of 2022, reinforcing the order of magnitude cited in the claim.

The attribution to air conditioning, however, is misleading. BBC reporting from June 2026 quotes WHO Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus warning that "European homes, workplaces and schools were not built for these temperatures" and noting that Europe is "the fastest-warming continent on Earth, heating at twice the global average." The WHO chief called on European countries to "implement heat health action plans," pointing to infrastructure and preparedness gaps rather than cultural rejection of cooling. The World Weather Attribution team likewise attributed the severity of the current heatwave primarily to climate change driven by fossil fuel burning, noting that "this event would not have been possible in June without climate change." Neither analysis identifies low air-conditioning adoption as the primary driver of mortality.
